An official announcement hasn’t yet been made as to the details of the partnership, but it has been confirmed by Netflix that the partnership is happening. TechRadar, the website that broke the news, divulged “Minecraft: Story Mode will indeed be the first game from Telltale to launch on Netflix in an adapted form.” Netflix has told Game Rant that Minecraft: Story Mode is a licensed 5-episode interactive narrative series coming to its service this fall.
It’s anybody’s guess just what changes will be made to Minecraft: Story Mode in order to “adapt” it to the Netflix service. TechRadar reported that the adapted version of the game will be playable entirely through the use of one’s television remote, without the use of any secondary peripheral device. We will have to wait until Netflix and Telltale officially come out with this news before we have concrete details on that.
It’s also worth noting that Netflix is referring to Minecraft: Story Mode as the “first” Telltale title that will launch on Netflix. It’s reasonable to assume from this wording that more Telltale games (and games in general) could be in the cards for the Netflix service if Minecraft: Story Mode ends up being successful. With the new season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead premiering on August 14th, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that Telltale’s The Walking Dead series might land itself on Netflix soon as well.
With this titan of the entertainment industry bringing video games under its wing, now is as good a time as any for wild speculation. We’ve seen in recent history that Microsoft has seen no shortage of success with its Xbox Game Pass, which could eventually be a catalyst for Netflix’s decision to begin development on a game streaming service of its own. However, Netflix has told us here at Game Rant that it doesn’t “have any plans to get into gaming”.
TechRadar’s sources say that an official public announcement of the partnership “could happen any day.” That announcement may come with more details on how the tale of Mincraft: Story Mode will unfold through Netflix.
Minecraft: Story Mode is available now for Android, iOS, PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
