For Minecraft realms, the subscription-based way for players to invite their friends online with them on a personal server, it has become relatively easy to find and add plugins that can change the way the game is played from the vanilla versions.
Find The Right Plugins
Choosing which plugins are wanted for a realm can be difficult, as there are more and more options becoming available. The Minecraft Marketplace is an excellent place to begin finding plugins that can change permissions, appearances, or content of the game, but there are many other places online where players can find excellent plugins invented by other players who try to avoid playing the game in a vanilla form.
There are a number of plugins that can do wildly different things to each player’s Minecraft experience. Realms and plugins for them allow players to share these variations to the vanilla game. From WorldEdit, a powerful building tool that can allow players to completely edit and redesign the worlds they are playing on, to WorldGuard, which allows players to create protected regions within their realm to stop fighting or destruction of builds within those regions. Players can choose whether they want mild changes to the vanilla game, like new recipes for minor items, or adding new mobs, or whether they want to completely change their experience.
Once players have chosen their preferred plugins, there should be options either on the Marketplace or any other website the plugins have been found to download the plugin. Once downloaded, there are only a few simple steps to install the plugins on the realm.
Checking The Plugins
Both before downloading and after, players should be aware that downloading plugins, particularly from websites other than the Minecraft Marketplace, can be dangerous as viruses could be attached if they are coming from less reputable websites.
After the download is finished, players should be able to open the file and see a message saying that the resource pack, world or whatever is contained has been successfully installed. The plugin should now be installed in the player’s version of Minecraft, but now needs to be added to the appropriate realm. Players can check the site they are downloading from is reputable in several ways, for example by checking their browser has locked the link with a secure connection.
Blocking cookies from such websites is also a good idea, and checking the security certificate of the website as well before downloading any plugins from it. Plugins can be made by anyone, which gives the game’s infinite potential a place to find a breeding ground, but it can also be used dangerously in the wrong hands.
Installing The Plugins
Once a plugin is added to Minecraft, players can go to the realm settings and enter the “behavior pack” or “resource pack” tab within the settings. Players should be able to control from here which add-ons are active and being added to the realm. It is also in this tab that players will be able to add new plugins to the realm from the ones installed in their own Minecraft game.
After the plugins are installed in the realm, every player on that realm should have access to the content from the plugin. This should work for any plugins or other types of add-ons compatible with realms and is a great way to further the Minecraft experience.
Minecraft is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
