Much remains to be shared about Minecraft Dungeons, but this opening cinematic does set the stage for the action RPG. The setup for Minecraft Dungeons is not unlike a standard game of Minecraft gone wrong. An Illager is ostracized from their people and wanders, looking for a new home. This Illager, “driven by rage,” comes across an artifact of great power. The Orb of Dominance grants this Illager great power, corrupting them, and turning them into the nefarious villain the Arch-Illager.

The Arch-Illager will be the villainous hand behind the events of Minecraft Dungeons, clearly. Until Mojang makes clear exactly what kinds of challenges will be put in front of the player, Minecraft fans can only speculate. But the Arch-Illager appears to be summoning monsters and rallying Illagers to attack towns, effectively building a war party. Players will likely be tasked with dismantling the Arch-Illager’s forces bit by bit. Why the Arch-Illager’s forces are all collected in dungeons is a mystery players will have to unravel on their own.

The first Minecraft Dungeons gameplay trailer showed several different levels in the game, including a forge, a mine, a necromancer’s temple, some standard-looking dungeons, as well as an open forested area not unlike what’s shown in the trailer. Minecraft Dungeons may actually start from the exact spot shown in the opening cinematic. Players may see the arch-Illager’s forces attacking a village and decide to rush to their defense.

Minecraft Dungeons will be an action RPG played from an isometric camera angle, not unlike the Diablo franchise. It won’t be much like the original Minecraft at all, other than its visual style. It can be played in 4-player co-op either locally or online. And with today’s opening cinematic video being released, it’s clear that the game will have a unique fantasy story, too. With each update, Minecraft Dungeons becomes a more impressive seeming game, making the wait until release all the more painful.

Minecraft Dungeons releases in spring 2020 on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
