Noise Caves in Minecraft

While the name makes these Minecraft caves sound loud, the “noise” part of noise cave doesn’t actually have anything to do with the sound. “Noise” refers to an algorithm that allows for a broader variety of cave-like shapes in video games. This Noise generation, called Perlin Noise, was developed by Ken Perlin in the 1980s to help create more randomized and natural-looking natural structures. It helps to randomly generate pixels based on the “shapes” that sounds make with gradient noise. This type of generation is called a procedural texture primitive.

The generated caves therefore will have a greater variety of structures and more natural-looking randomization. While the old-school carvers and canyons still appear, they will blend with the noise versions of Minecraft caves in order to make newer, weirder, cooler-looking cave structures. This gives Minecraft two whole new types of caves, called “Cheese” and “Spaghetti” caves.

Cheese Caves in Minecraft

Cheese caves are the larger, more porous caves. These usually massive caves usually have a whole lot of holes in them, similar to Swiss cheese, made with a combination of the randomized formation of the cave coupled with pillars. These types of caves tend to be large and rounded, and nothing like them has been seen in Minecraft’s overworld before the Caves and Cliffs Part 2 update.

Spaghetti Caves in Minecraft

The other type of randomly generated cave in Minecraft’s new Caves and Cliffs is called a spaghetti cave. These caves are long and thin interconnected caverns that can sometimes lead to larger caverns but don’t always. These skinny types of caves make for even more variety, danger, and difficulty in spelunking under the ground.

Aquafers in Caves and Cliffs

Lush cave biomes, dripstone cave biomes, carvers, canyons, cheese, and spaghetti caves can all also be Aquafer Caves in the new update. This means that they can contain underground rivers and lakes with a water level independent of sea level. This allows for more interesting underground water features and also helps to create a more natural look in Minecraft’s underground locations. This also means that some caves may be completely underwater, which means players will want to bring some underwater breathing potions.

Minecraft is available for all major platforms.
