The U.S. Marshal Service announced on Wednesday that they had raised the fugitive status of Jacob Blair Scott and are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to his arrest. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Scott, 43, is facing a 14-count indictment that charges him with sexual battery, touching a child for lustful purposes, and exploitation of a child, the U.S. Marshals said in a news release.
He was arrested in Jackson County, Mississippi, after his 14-year-old stepdaughter became pregnant, Denver7 reported.
Scott was out on bond when he failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing.
Investigators believe Scott faked his death when they found his abandoned dinghy off the coast of Orange Beach, Alabama, in July 2018. During their search of Scott’s boat, authorities found a gun and a note, but there was “little forensic evidence indicating a suicide,” the U.S. Marshals said.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Katrina Crouse previously told Denver7 that authorities found the discovery suspicious as only a small amount of blood was found.
“Normally in situations where somebody is shot (or) committed suicide, you’re going to have other forensic-type evidence. For example, brain matter, hair, skin, bone,” she told the station. “None of that was found.”
She also said the gun had been found tied to the boat. “Almost like they wanted to make sure that the gun was discovered,” she said.
Scott’s remains were not found despite a week-long search of the Gulf of Mexico—and authorities later discovered he had withdrawn $45,000 from a bank account before his disappearance. That money was never recovered, the U.S. Marshals said.
The U.S. Marshals also said Scott is a “survivalist” as well as a military veteran who received a Purple Heart in 2011 for injuries he sustained while deployed in Iraq. His military background and knowledge of the outdoors “may enable him to live off the grid,” the U.S. Marshals added.
Scott is described as a white male with brown hair and blue eyes. He is 5 feet and 10 inches tall, weighs around 225 pounds and has tattoos of a machete knife, a scorpion and a compass with feathers, authorities said.
According to the U.S. Marshals, there have been possible sightings of Scott in Mississippi, Colorado, Nevada, and Louisiana.
“Jacob Scott stands accused of unspeakable crimes against a child,” U.S. Marshals Service Director Donald Washington said. “The Marshals will leave no stone unturned until we bring him to justice.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to notify the agency at the nearest U.S. Marshals office, by calling 1-877-WANTED-2 or on the website.
