Back in July, Baltimore Ravens receiver Miles Boykin revealed a dirty childhood secret: back when he was in 6th grade, he put his Xbox Live Gold subscription on his mom Felicia’s credit card without telling her. It was only until earlier this summer that she found out about it, but as Boykin told it, she insisted on continuing to pay since she’d already been doing so for years without knowing, a classic example of parental guilt-tripping.

Spurred on by this, Boykin revealed today that he had reached out EA to get his mom on the cover of Madden NFL 21 as a way of thanking her for footing his Xbox bill, as well as recognizing her support for his football career and her work as a labor and delivery nurse at Chicago Heights’ St. James Hospital. With the help of Xbox, they were able to provide her with a special gift case sporting an official copy of the game with her photo on it (plus the message “Pay up son”). This technically makes Ms. Boykin “the first ever female MVP cover athlete,” according to Xbox’s marketers.

It’s certainly a high honor and a nice gesture (not to mention a welcome break from the controversy surrounding Madden NFL 21), yet one can’t help but wonder if it truly makes up for years of childhood freeloading on Boykin’s part. Xbox subscriptions don’t come that cheap, after all.

Madden NFL 21 is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X to follow later this year.
