Early in the second period, the 22-year-old was battling for the puck when suddenly, he took another stride and saw his leg and ankle bend back in the opposite direction, while his knee appeared to jut outward.

Rantanen was taken to the dressing room for further examination, and the team later announced via Twitter that he would not return to Monday’s game. On Oct. 23, head coach Jared Bednar told reporters that Rantanen is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Bednar said he expects to know more about Finnish winger’s timetable for a return by “early next week” and that the team hopes Rantanen’s return will come in “significantly less” than four to six weeks.
Rantanen, who has five goals and 11 points in eight games so far this season, signed a six-year extension with the Avalanche in September. Colorado will have to find a way to make up for the offense he provides while he is sidelined.
