He made an impressive leaping grab in the first quarter against the Chiefs but appeared to hobble after landing. He stayed on the field as Los Angeles hurried back to the line to get another play off, and then left after Austin Ekeler rushed for 8 yards.

The snag was exactly the type of play Los Angeles’ offense has missed over the past two weeks. Williams came into the game tied for second on the team with 37 receptions, leading the team with 495 receiving yards and second with three touchdown receptions.

Here’s the latest on Williams’ injury.

Mike Williams injury update

The Chargers announced at halftime that Williams was out for the remainder of the game with an ankle injury. He finished with just the one catch for 15 yards.

An ankle injury had kept Williams out over the past two weeks. He suffered the injury in the team’s Week 7 contest against the Seahawks, a game in which he caught seven passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

The Chargers had a bye the following week before he missed games against the Falcons in Week 9 and the 49ers in Week 10.

Chargers WR depth chart

While Williams was unable to continue playing against the Chiefs, Allen remained in the game. The Chargers have shown they can play with the depth they have at the position.

Josh Palmer has taken a huge role in the offense, and has become one of the team’s primary receivers out wide. Per PFF, he has lined up outside 238 times, second only to Williams’ 259. Michael Bandy, who is third with 108, has seen his highest snap counts on passing plays come during games in which Williams was hurt (Week 7-9) with 39 snaps each week, according to PFF.

Palmer entered the game tied with Williams with 37 catches and the third with 390 receiving yards. He has one touchdown reception. Bandy has caught nine passes for 74 yards in 2022.

If Williams has to miss extended time, expect to see Allen and Palmer as the primary receivers out wide with DeAndre Carter in the slot, and Bandy as the top backup.
