The former VP under Donald Trump tweeted a number of pictures showing him speaking with officials and attending migrant centers during his time in office while adding: “Here’s what it looks like when a Vice President visits the Southern Border.
“It’s time Vice President Harris,” Pence tweeted on Friday. “It’s Time to Deal With the #BidenBorderCrisis!”
Harris was personally tasked by President Joe Biden to try and control the surge of migrants crossing the border, which have been hitting record levels in recent months.
In April, nearly 179,000 people were detained trying to enter the border, the highest levels since April of last year. A number of Republican figures have criticized Biden for his handling of the Border situation after walking back some of Trump’s more hardline immigration policies.
Harris has not only been criticized for failing to visit the border personally, but also for her responses when asked why this is the case.
In an interview with NBC News last week, Harris falsely claimed that she had visited the border, before laughing and adding that she also hasn’t been to Europe as Vice President when questioned on the remark.
“At some point, you know, we are going to the border. We’ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border,” Harris told NBC’s Lester Holt.
“You haven’t been to the border,” Holt replied.
“And I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris added. “And, I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making. I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”
Harris made the comments during her her first overseas trip since taking office to Guatemala and Mexico.
In a press conference alongside Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, Harris said to those hoping to illegally enter the U.S. “Do not come. Do not come. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our borders.”
She added: “If you come to our border, you will be turned back.”
In another interview with Univision, Harris was also pressed on why she has yet to visit the border.
“I’ve said I’m going to the border,” Harris told Univision anchor Ilia Calderón on Thursday, June 10.
“When are you going to the border, Vice President?” Calderón asked. I’m not finished,” Harris replied with a laugh. “I’ve said I’m going to the border.”
“If we are going to deal with the problems at the border, we have to deal with the problems that cause people to go to the border. To flee to the border. And that is the root cause.
“So, my first trip as vice president of the United States was to go, in terms of a foreign trip, to Guatemala. To be on the ground there to address and be informed of the root causes. Why are the people of Guatemala leaving?”
The White House has been contacted for comment about Pence’s tweet.
