Video footage of his speech shows Pence speaking over some of the audience members’ shouts, calling him a “traitor.”
“It is great to be back with so many patriots dedicated to faith and freedom and the road to the majority,” Pence began, followed by applause.
In the video, cries of the word “traitor” began as hecklers in the crowd started to shout while Pence continued.
“I’m a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order,” Pence said as the harassers in the audience grew louder, continuing to shout the word “traitor” at him.
Witnesses reported that some of the hecklers were removed from the event.
The conference, hosted by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, took place in Orlando, Florida this week. The Conservative Summit featured a number of politicians, including Pence, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.).
Newsweek reached out to the Faith and Freedom Coalition for comment but has not heard back.
The calls and shouts of Pence’s betrayal led many to believe the hecklers were highlighting the wounded divisions brought about by the 2020 election, in which Pence has continuously received criticism for the role he played in Congress’ certification of President Joe Biden’s victory.
After the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump and his supporters have pushed the narrative of widespread voter fraud, which also played a role in instigating the insurrection on January 6 at the Capitol.
That day, Pence was still overseeing the proceedings as vice president and had to be rushed to safety as some in the crowd called for his execution.
Pence has seen more trouble from Trump supporters since then, which he acknowledged a few weeks ago in a speech in New Hampshire.
“You know, President Trump and I have spoken many times since we left office,” he said. “And I don’t know if we’ll ever see eye to eye on that day [January 6]. But I will always be proud of what we accomplished for the American people over the last four years.”
