Flanagan is a filmmaker who is known for editing, directing, and writing his films and television shows. The projects he’s known for are typically in the horror genre, including The Haunting of Hill House, and have usually received acclaim from critics. Horror is often a genre that is not done in a good manner because it has common tropes, is often known for bad writing, and can be predictable. However, Flanagan and Netflix seem to have earned to trust of audiences and critics.

Flanagan, for those who don’t know, is responsible for bringing multiple horror projects to the world, including a few that have Netflix exclusivity. He’s written, edited, and directed The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Hush, Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, Oculus, recent hit Midnight Mass, and the upcoming The Midnight Club. With Fall of the House of Usher, Flanagan is set to direct four of the eight episodes in this upcoming series. It isn’t expected to be the start of a long-running show, instead, it will be its own self-contained story that will essentially be a limited solo series. A ‘one-and-done,’ so to speak, that will tell a story, get in, and get out.
Now that Flanagan is set to take on a new project, fans should anticipate something of good quality, just like his previous works. When a creator has that much control over the script, filming, and post-production, then the quality more often than not stays in touch. Too often fans have seen studio intervention that usually diminishes the quality of a project due to conflicting visions and the corporate side being “out of touch.” A notable example of this was the creative conflict between Warner Bros. and director David Ayer on Suicide Squad.
Some of Flanagan’s projects, like Doctor Sleep, draw inspiration from existing literature, but the director makes an effort to make it his own by using the main beats or checkpoints of a story while changing everything else. The director also has the challenge of adapting stories from one media format and bringing it to the realm of film or television.
Fall of the House of Usher is currently in development.
