Top Rank announced Monday that the two will be competing in a junior-lightweight unification fight. Mayer will be defending her WBO, IBF and The Ring titles while Baumgardner puts her WBC title on the line.

A date and venue have not been selected, but Top Rank has confirmed that it is booked for “late summer/early fall.” Early reports state that the fight will air on ESPN in the U.S. and Sky Sports in the U.K.

“Mikaela Mayer’s prodigious talent is only matched by her tremendous ambition,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum. “She wants the biggest fights, and Alycia Baumgardner is a worthy champion. This is a huge event and one of the most anticipated matchups in women’s boxing.”

A member of the 2016 Olympics, Mayer is a three-time USA Boxing National Champion. Making her pro debut in 2017, Mayer won the WBC-NABF super-featherweight title in 2018. In 2020, she beat Ewa Brodnicka for the WBO junior-lightweight title. In June 2021, she defended the belt against Erica Farias and in November of that year beat Maiva Hamadouche to win the IBF and The Ring junior-lightweight titles.

The Hamadouche fight was considered a Fight of the Year contender. Mayer’s last fight was a unanimous decision win over Jennifer Han in April.

A 2014 National Golden Gloves champion, Baumgardner made her pro debut in 2017. A WBC International super-featherweight champion, Baumgardner lost the title against Christina Linardatou in 2018. Since then, she has won six in a row. Against Terri Harper in November 2021, Baumgardner froze her with a brutal punch to the face to win the WBC title. That win put her on the map.

Baumgardner defended her title in April against Edith Soledad Matthysse, beating her via unanimous decision.

There were rumors of Baumgardner fighting WBA champion Hyun Mi Choi in the summer, but nothing came to fruition. The last time the WBA champion fought in a ring was in 2020. Her status is unknown at this time. Baumgardner and Mayer have had their eyes on one another the past few months, getting into a war of words all over social media.

The fight between Baumgardner and Mayer comes after Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano clashed for lightweight gold inside Madison Square Garden.
