According to the Detroit Free Press, it’s safe to say Cabrera won’t be ready for the start of spring training and is too soon to tell if the nine-time All-Star will be ready for opening vay.
Cabrera underwent surgery last October to remove bone spurs from his right ankle and repair a stress fracture in his foot.
“He’s in a partial weight-bearing stage, six weeks in a boot, which began just before Christmas,” Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said during a phone conversation from his home in Lakeland, Fla. “He’ll get back and see Dr. (Robert) Anderson next month and hope the CT scan will show that everything’s well and that he can move into a full weight-bearing program.”
Cabrera was originally expected to be sidelined for at least three months, but according to Rand, the recovery time will be closer to four months.
The 2012 Triple Crown winner will be entering the second year of his eight-year contract extension worth $248 million. He finished the regular season with 25 home runs, his lowest output since 2006, and 109 RBI while slashing .313/.371/.524 in 159 games.
