Marvel’s Midnight Suns has a large cast of heroes to deploy, with four more coming in future DLC, and upgrading their skills and capabilities is essential to getting the most out of Marvel’s finest. Essences play a major role here, serving as one of the main resources players will find themselves always in need of as the game progresses. Here are the ways that Essences can be used.

Upgrading Cards

A Hero’s cards can be upgraded by merging copies of the same card together, but this requires enough of the correct essence. Attack Essence for Attack Cards, Skill Essence for Skill Cards, and Heroic Essence for Heroic Cards. This will be the largest essence sink in the game, constantly eating up large amounts of the player’s essence reserves, so it’s always important to restock whenever possible.

Modded Cards don’t need an extra copy of themselves to be upgraded, but in exchange, they cost even more of the correct Essence type to upgrade, making Essence even more important here.

Club Activities

Many of the Clubs hosted by the Abbey make use of various resources to create useful items and upgrade cards, and one resource most of them will ask for is Essence. The exact Essence required will differ based on the Club’s current request, and they’ll usually want extra materials as well, but since fulfilling Club gathering tasks offers extra rewards whenever the club is attended, it’s well worth taking the time and Essence to help out.

Crafting

Whether at the Forge or in Agatha’s Cauldron, many crafting recipes call for Essence in exchange for powerful items. Card Crafting requires blueprints too, but even blueprints can be fabricated with enough essence, meaning that a sufficient amount of Essence will allow players to make a bunch of extra cards and produce extra copies for upgrading.

On the subject of crafting, it’s also worth noting that Agatha’s Cauldron can be used to create Essence if players have enough of the proper ingredients, along with the right recipe. This can be useful for restocking the ever-dwindling supply if players don’t want to head out on a mission or break down some cards.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is available now for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S and is coming soon to PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
