Firaxis announced the animated prequel shorts during the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase which helped kick off D23 2022 on Friday, September 9. It followed a new look at Midnight Suns’ latest gameplay trailer showcasing the card mechanic which appears to be the way players will direct combat. The animated prequels followed, with Firaxis revealing the opening montage for the prequels showcasing the various heroes which will make up the titular team.

As mentioned above, the opening for the series appears to channel the beloved 1990s X-Men animated series by running through the game’s roster of heroes. Wolverine is the only X-Man to be featured in both openings, which isn’t surprising as he was a focal point of the 90s series and has been one of the heroes at the forefront of Firaxis’ promotional material. However, the inclusion of Spider-Man and Iron Man provides some links to their respective 90s cartoons, as well, and one of the earliest shared comic book universes seen in TV or films.
The opening also highlights the many other characters set to star as part of the titular team doing battle with Lilith, Mother of Demons, and her quest to conquer the universe. Blade, Nico Minoru, and the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider look fittingly supernatural, which won’t be surprising to many comic readers familiar with Marvel’s darker, supernatural side. However, it does allow Firaxis to showcase their vision of what Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Wolverine would look like if they needed to embrace the magical side of the universe.
Firaxis’ animated prequels won’t be the last bit of animated nostalgia coming to players and comic readers, though, as Disney’s upcoming series lineup for Disney Plus shows. X-Men ‘97 and Spider-Man: Freshman Year both appear to be leaning into Marvel’s 90s animated series, with the former specifically serving as a continuation of the original X-Men series which ran from 1992 to 1997.
Midnight Suns is scheduled to release December 2 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions also in development.
